I have been experimenting the last few years to find the best mojito recipe. I think I have finally found it! The not so secret, secret is making a mojito simple syrup first.
Boil 1 cup of water, one cup of sugar, ten mint leaves and wedges of a whole lime for about ten minutes. Once cooled, drain the limes and mint leaves out. Store in a container and keep in the fridge when not in use.
What I love about mojitos is that they can be very versatile. You can change it up by using different flavored seltzers or adding fruit. Wegmans has a lot of different flavored seltzer waters for less than $1 per liter (mixed berry, lime, tangerine lime, passionfruit, etc).
Pro tips: I like to use Bacardi light Rum for Mojitos. You’ll also need a muddler for these bad boys. In case of emergency, the end of a wooden spoon works for muddling (don’t ask how we discovered this hahaha). A shaker glass does kick this drink up a notch.
To make one mojito:
3 lime wedges aka one half of a lime cut into thirds
3-5 mint leaves (depends on size)
2 tbsp mojito simple syrup
1.5 shots Bacardi
Seltzer water (can be flavored if desired)
Optional: fruit (blueberries, strawberries, etc)
In a small bowl, muddle one lime wedge and mint leaves. Add 2 lime wedges, the mojito simple syrup and fruit (if desired). Fill the glass you want to drink the mojitos out of with ice. We like to use stemless wine glasses for mojitos. Pour mixture, ice and Bacardi into shaker glass. Shake. Pour into glass and fill with seltzer water. Stir! Garnish with a mint leaf and fruit.
Make simple syrup using equal parts sugar and equal parts hot water.
